Nicolaus Copernicus Bench in Olsztyn, Bronze memorial bench in Olsztyn, Poland.
The Nicolaus Copernicus Bench in Olsztyn is a bronze sculpture depicting the astronomer seated and holding an armillary sphere, placed near the entrance of Olsztyn Castle. The figure is life-size, and the bench has an open space beside it so that anyone can sit next to him.
Copernicus lived and worked at Olsztyn Castle between 1516 and 1521 as administrator of the Warmia Chapter, using it as a base for his astronomical observations. The bronze bench was created to mark this direct connection between the man and the city.
The sculpture shows Copernicus sitting in a relaxed pose, as if waiting for a conversation to start. Many visitors choose to sit beside him, turning a historical figure into an everyday encounter.
The sculpture stands just outside the castle entrance and is easy to reach on foot from the city center. Since it is outdoors, there is no entry requirement and it can be seen at any hour of the day.
Inside the castle, lines engraved directly into the wall of the chapter hall were used by Copernicus as a solar measuring device during his stay. The sculpture outside and this engraved instrument inside tell the same story from two different angles.
