Inowłódz Castle, Medieval castle in Inowłódz, Poland
Inowłódz Castle is a medieval Gothic fortress in Inowłódz, central Poland, built on raised ground overlooking the Pilica River. The structure is made of thick sandstone walls and includes an octagonal tower alongside a rectangular defensive tower that together define the layout of the complex.
The castle was built on the orders of King Kazimierz the Great in the 14th century to protect a key trade route along the Pilica River. In the 16th century it was substantially rebuilt, which changed its appearance and strengthened its defenses.
The southern and eastern wings of the castle now house a local library and information center, used by residents on a daily basis. Walking through the site, visitors can see how a medieval structure has become part of everyday community life.
The castle sits on raised ground and is reached on foot by a short climb over uneven terrain, so sturdy shoes are a good idea. The renovated wings that house the library and information center can be visited, though hours may vary by season.
A counterweight system for the drawbridge was built directly into the southern tower during the 16th-century reconstruction and can still be seen today. It is a rare surviving example of how military engineers of the time incorporated mechanical solutions into the fabric of a building.
