Szaniec Hubala, Military memorial in Anielin, Poland
Szaniec Hubala is a military memorial in Anielin, Opoczno County, built around a large central boulder surrounded by a circular stone wall with inscribed commemorative plaques. The structure stands inside the Spalskie forests, on the exact spot where a battle took place in 1940.
Major Henryk Dobrzanski, known as Hubal, fell here on April 30, 1940, during a fight against German troops. His unit was one of the last regular Polish army detachments to keep fighting after the September 1939 campaign.
Each year, people gather at the Szaniec Hubala for ceremonies that honor the Polish soldiers who fought in this forest. The memorial draws both local families and history enthusiasts who come to pay their respects in person.
The memorial is reached by walking marked paths through the Spalskie forests, so sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are a good idea. Information plaques on site explain the events, and the site can be visited at any time of year, though spring and autumn offer the most comfortable forest conditions.
After the battle, German troops removed the body of the Major, and his exact burial place has never been found. The memorial therefore marks a place of memory with no grave beneath it, which sets it apart from most military sites.
