KL Plaszow – Karcer obozowy, Former prison block at Nazi concentration camp in Kraków, Poland.
KL Plaszow – Karcer obozowy is a surviving prison block from the former KL Plaszow concentration camp, located at Jerozolimska Street 3 in Kraków. The building contains individual cells and interrogation rooms that were used to punish and question prisoners held in the camp.
Before 1939, the building served as the headquarters of the Jewish Burial Society in Kraków, functioning as part of the local Jewish community's infrastructure. After the Nazis established the KL Plaszow camp in 1942, they converted it into a detention and punishment block for prisoners.
The building originally belonged to a Jewish community organization, and that contrast between its first purpose and its later use as a prison block is something visitors often find striking. Walking through the space makes the shift in its function feel very real and immediate.
The site can be visited as part of the broader memorial area of the former camp, and arriving earlier in the day tends to make the experience quieter. Wear comfortable shoes, as the paths across the grounds can be uneven in places.
The building was used as a filming location for Schindler's List precisely because it remained largely unchanged from its wartime appearance. It is one of only a handful of original structures from the entire camp that still stands today.
