Castra Buridava, Roman military fort in Stolniceni, Romania.
Castra Buridava is a Roman military fort in Stolniceni built with stone walls, watchtowers, and administrative buildings. The ruins spread across a large area and show the typical layout of a Roman fort with structures for soldiers and officers.
The fort was founded around 103 AD under Emperor Trajan and was part of the Limes Alutanus, which protected the Roman border along the Danube. It was rebuilt several times and served for centuries as an important stronghold against threats from the north.
Multiple military units including I Hispanorum, II Flavia Bessorum, and V Macedonica stationed at the fort shaped the development of local infrastructure.
The site is easily reached from the town of Râmnicu Vâlcea and is located near the village of Stolniceni. Artifacts from excavations can be viewed at the Vâlcea County Museum.
Excavations revealed well-preserved bathing facilities with five distinct apses, showing advanced Roman building techniques. These structures offer insight into the daily life and engineering skills of the soldiers.
