Lubyanka Building

The Lubyanka Building is a large administrative structure with yellow brick facades in Stalinist style, containing multiple wings and housing various government functions. The complex occupies a full city block and brings together several interconnected structures.

Originally built in 1898 as an insurance office, the building became the headquarters of Soviet security services starting in 1918, evolving through the Cheka and into the KGB era. The structure underwent several expansions and modifications to accommodate the changing needs of these agencies.

Two museum sections inside display intelligence service records and technical equipment from different periods of Russian history. Visitors can see how surveillance and intelligence work were documented over time.

Access is restricted and typically requires special authorization, with only certain areas open to the public. The museum sections operate on specific days and should be checked in advance before planning a visit.

A dark Soviet joke described this as the tallest building in Moscow because one could see Siberia from its basement cells. This grim quip reflected the fear the building inspired during times of repression.
