Soldatskoye Pole, War memorial in Volgograd, Russia
Soldatskoye Pole is a memorial dedicated to the Battle of Stalingrad on a former battlefield near Volgograd. The site features a star-shaped crater filled with artillery fragments, surrounded by plow blades and a bronze statue of a girl.
This site was a major battleground in 1942 when Soviet forces clashed with German troops during the Battle of Stalingrad. After the war, the heavily damaged field was transformed into a memorial in the 1970s.
The name honors the Soviet soldiers who died here during the war. You can see plow blades displayed throughout the site, symbolizing how the destroyed battlefield was later returned to agriculture.
The memorial sits along the Volgograd-Moscow highway and is accessible by regular transportation from central Volgograd. The grounds are open year-round, offering visitors free access to walk through the entire site at their own pace.
Before becoming a memorial, the field underwent extensive demining operations that recovered more than 6500 unexploded ordnance items between 1942 and 1975. This intensive clearing effort was essential before the ground could be made safe for visitors.
