Lyudnikov's Island, Military stronghold in Krasnooktyabrsky District, Volgograd, Russia.
Lyudnikov's Island is a memorial complex along the western bank of the Volga River honoring a crucial defensive stand during World War II. The site includes preserved ruins of a command post and several burial areas spread across a flat section of land next to a large industrial complex.
During the major urban warfare in the city in 1942 and 1943, a Soviet infantry division defended this isolated position against repeated enemy attacks. The defenders held their ground despite being completely surrounded and suffered severe losses.
The site is named after the Soviet commander whose division held this ground and honors those who fell defending it. Visitors can see burial grounds and memorial stones scattered across the area today.
The site is reachable on foot through residential areas on the far side of the industrial complex, with paths across the grounds themselves easy to navigate. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and bring weather protection since the location is open ground and can be snow-covered during cold months.
Radio operators worked at a station to maintain communication while under constant fire and completely cut off from outside help. These operators played a crucial role in keeping the defense coordinated despite all links to the outside world being severed.
