Chelyabinsk kolkhoznik tank monument, Tank memorial in Dzerzhinskiy District, Volgograd, Russia.
The Chelyabinsk kolkhoznik tank monument is a T-34 tank placed on the northwestern slope of Mamayev Kurgan, a large hill in Volgograd, Russia. The vehicle stands on a low base in an open area, making it visible from several directions as you walk around it.
The monument honors soldiers of the 21st Army of the Don Front who fought alongside the 62nd Army in January 1943 during the final push to retake Stalingrad. Their combined effort led to the encirclement and surrender of the German forces in the city.
The name of the monument connects it to Chelyabinsk, an industrial city in the Urals whose population raised funds to build tanks for the front. The word kolkhoznik, meaning collective farm worker, was inscribed on the vehicle to honor those who contributed.
The monument sits along a path on the northwestern side of Mamayev Kurgan, so it is easy to reach on foot from the main entrance. Visiting it as part of a wider walk around the hill lets you see the other memorials on the same site.
The T-34 on display was not chosen as a symbol but as a vehicle that actually took part in the fighting around Stalingrad. This makes it a direct physical trace of the battle rather than a later addition placed for commemoration.
