Communal House in 4th Syromyatnichesky Lane, Constructivist residential complex in Basmanny District, Russia.
The Communal House in 4th Syromyatnichesky Lane is a constructivist residential complex with two main buildings connected by an arch. The structure features a pentagonal courtyard surrounded by large glass stairwells and corridor-style apartment layouts.
The complex was designed in 1927 as a response to the housing shortage following the Russian Revolution and embodied early Soviet residential ideals. A connecting arch was added decades later, completing the structure as it appears today.
The complex housed shared meeting halls and recreational rooms on each floor where residents gathered together. This design reflected beliefs about how people should live and interact as a community.
The complex is situated near Kurskaya and Chkalovskaya metro stations, making it easy to access by public transport. The building can be viewed from the street, though there are no organized interior visiting areas.
The initial design called for three buildings, but only two were completed, leaving the project unfinished in its original form. The arch added years later was an attempt to bridge this architectural gap.
