Генеральная балка, Natural ravine in Rostov-on-Don, Russia
The General Ravine extends through the central part of Rostov-on-Don with stone bridges connecting various sections of the urban landscape.
The ravine received its name from General Ivan Matveev's cattle yards, which were located in this area during the early 18th century.
The Baikovsky Bridge, built in 1864, became a central element of the ravine, representing the engineering capabilities of 19th century Rostov-on-Don.
The ravine transformation in the 1880s led to the construction of the first sewage system in Rostov-on-Don, improving urban sanitation.
Two bridges crossed the ravine: one on the Taganrog road and another near the future Maly Prospect, now known as Chekhov Avenue.
