Usachov-Chernyaev college, building of Russia
The Usachov-Chernyaev college is a school building constructed in early classical style within the Khamovniki District, featuring thick walls and tall windows. The structure displays typical characteristics of its period: sturdy construction with simple ornamentation, columns, and functional design intended for educational use.
The building originated before 1778 as part of an estate initially owned by the Koshelev family, later passing to the Maltsov and Nechaev families. In the 1800s it became the Ussachev-Chernyaev girls school, subsequently the military used the estate, and in 1939 it was converted into a military dormitory.
The building is named after the Usachov and Chernyaev families who ran an educational institution here, marking its role in the community's life. The name reflects how local families shaped the neighborhood through their commitment to schooling and learning.
The building is located on Zubovskaya Street in a quiet residential area and is easy to locate. It is not currently open to the public, though restoration work is in progress, so the situation may change in the future.
The building suffered fire damage in 2015 which made it more fragile and endangered its future. This incident highlighted the urgency of preservation efforts and made it one of Moscow's at-risk historical sites.
