Khanagsky Waterfall, Natural waterfall in Tabasaransky District, Russia
Khanagsky Waterfall is a two-tier waterfall located near Khuchni village in the Tabasaransky District of Dagestan, Russia. The water drops over rocky ledges and collects at the base in a small natural pool, set within the rugged terrain of the Caucasus Mountains.
The waterfall received official protection in 1981, when it was classified as a natural monument under Russia's protected areas program. This status was granted to safeguard the site as a notable geographical feature within Dagestan.
The waterfall became known to a wider public after it appeared as a filming location in the 1996 Russian film "Prisoner of the Caucasus". Many visitors today come partly because of this connection, and locals in the nearby village are well aware of the site's role in popular culture.
The waterfall is reached on foot from Khuchni village, and the path crosses uneven mountain terrain, so sturdy footwear is a good idea. Water flow tends to be strongest in spring and early summer when snowmelt adds to the stream.
The cliffs around the waterfall are home to rare plant species listed in the Red Books of both Russia and Dagestan. This makes the site a point of interest for anyone curious about mountain flora, even though most visitors come for the water itself.
