Kirche in Sarepta, Lutheran church in Old Sarepta, Volgograd, Russia.
Kirche in Sarepta is a Lutheran church from the 18th century located in the historic district of Old Sarepta, in Volgograd. The building has a symmetrical layout and carries the architectural traits of Northern European religious construction from that period.
The building was put up in 1772 for a German Lutheran community that had settled along the Volga. Over the 19th century the congregation adopted Moravian practices, and the church later came under Soviet administration.
The building now houses a museum where everyday objects from the Moravian community are on display. Furniture, tools, and household items give a clear picture of how this religious group organized its daily life and work.
The church stands in the Old Sarepta historic area and is easy to spot from the street since it stands out against the modern surroundings. Walking through the old settlement is the best way to take in the whole site at a comfortable pace.
The name Sarepta comes from the Bible and refers to a city where a widow gave shelter to the prophet Elijah. The German settlers chose this name on purpose to express the spiritual mission they felt they were carrying out.
