Дом М. Н. Волконского

The Volkonsky House sits on Maly Kislovsky Lane and displays classical architecture with rusticated pilasters and a white stone cornice on the first floor. The facade combines elegant details with solid proportions that reflect the style of Moscow noble houses from the 18th century.

The mansion was built in the first half of the 18th century and originally belonged to Prince Volkonsky. In the early 19th century, poet Konstantin Batyushkov lived there before the building later served public and cultural purposes.

The building housed the Moscow Provincial Gymnasium after the 1812 fire and later became the main building of the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts. These roles shaped its importance as a center for education and cultural training in the city.

The building sits in a central city district and is easily accessible on foot. Visitors should check ahead about available tours or events since access can vary depending on current use.

Konstantin Saradzhev, a bell ringer with perfect pitch, lived in the house and devoted his life to assembling a concert bell collection. His work gave the building a place in Moscow's musical and acoustic heritage.
