Старый вокзал, Heritage railway station in Ulyanovsk, Russia
The Old Railway Station in Ulyanovsk is a complex with a two-story central building, single-story wing sections, and a 38-meter tower capped with a red star. The entire structure is connected by colonnades and sits on Railway Street in the city.
Construction started in May 1951 under architect Mikhail Gotlib and replaced the original single-story red brick building from 1898. The new building later received recognition as a regional cultural heritage site, marking its importance to the region.
The building displays typical Stalinist design with its symmetrical layout and angular, monumental forms visible in the colonnade and tower. This architectural approach reflects values that were important during the period when it was built.
The former passenger hall has been converted into a restaurant complex seating around 300 people and operating daily. Visitors can view the complex from outside and appreciate its architecture and design while walking around the area.
From the 1980s through the early 2000s, a youth cafe called Pod Spilem operated inside the building, named after the prominent tower spire. This gathering place was popular with young people and now lives only in the memories of those who knew it.
