Ascension Cathedral, Ulyanovsk, Orthodox cathedral in Ulyanovsk, Russia
Ascension Cathedral is a Russian Orthodox cathedral in Ulyanovsk built in the Russian Baroque style. Its blue exterior walls and white ornamental details stand out in the surrounding area, and its towers can be seen from many parts of the city.
Construction of the cathedral began in 1997 but was halted by the financial crisis of 1998, leaving the site dormant for years. Work resumed in 2006 and the building was completed in 2015.
The cathedral is the main Orthodox church in the city and draws worshippers for services throughout the year. On feast days like Easter, people gather outside the building before and after the liturgy, filling the surrounding square.
The cathedral is open daily and holds services in the morning and evening, with larger crowds on feast days. Modest dress is expected inside, so it is worth coming prepared if you plan to enter during a service.
The original plans called for a baptismal church, a Sunday school, and a diocesan museum to be built alongside the main building. None of these were ever constructed, so what stands today is only part of what was first envisioned for the site.
