Kommunisticheskaya Street 4, Smolensk

The building at Kommunisticheskaya Street 4 is a former schoolhouse with large windows, stone decorations, and classical Russian architectural details on its exterior. Inside, it preserves the original room layouts with multiple classrooms, narrow corridors, and staircases typical of 19th century educational facilities.

The building was constructed in 1874 as the Alexandrovskoye Real School, an important educational institution in the Smolensk region. After the Soviet period, it was converted into a museum to document the history of schooling from that era.

The museum displays how students learned in the 19th century, with original classroom setups, period desks, and teaching materials on view. These items reveal what school life felt like for children and teachers during that era.

The museum is centrally located in Smolensk and is reachable by several bus lines that stop near the street. Plan about 1 to 2 hours for your visit, and note that the staircases are narrow.

The classrooms still display the original arrangement of student desks and teacher stations set up 150 years ago. This unchanged room setup allows visitors to imagine how school lessons actually took place back then.
