Porokhovaya Tower of Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin

The Porokhovaya Tower is a defensive fortification that forms part of the Kremlin wall in Nizhny Novgorod and has three visible floors plus one underground level. The structure shows traditional features of medieval defensive architecture with multiple openings designed for protection.

The tower was built in the 16th century and once stored gunpowder and ammunition, which gave it its name. This military storage function shaped its role in the kremlin's defensive system for centuries.

Access to the top of the tower is available through guided tours that lead to the observation deck. From there, visitors can look out over the Volga River and the plaza below.

Natural limestone formations grew on the ceilings of the lower chambers over centuries, creating shapes that resemble cave structures. This geological feature developed because of the moist environment deep inside the tower.
