Borisoglebskaya Tower of Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, Fortification tower in Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, Russia
The Borisoglebskaya Tower is a fortification tower of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin built into the stone defense system on a steep slope. The structure consists of four tiers with combat chambers and thick walls designed for defense, matching the construction style of other towers in the kremlin complex.
The original tower built in the 16th century was torn down in 1785 after a landslide threatened the structure. It was rebuilt in 1972 using information from archaeological investigations of the site.
The tower takes its name from the nearby Church of Saints Boris and Gleb that stands close to the kremlin fortification. This connection to the local religious site shaped how people in the area identified and remembered the structure.
The tower can be viewed from outside as part of the kremlin fortification, accessible from various points around the site. Wear comfortable shoes since the terrain is steep and pathways can be uneven in places.
Archaeologists uncovered remains of the original tower's base level buried beneath the ground during excavations in the 1960s. These findings allowed researchers to accurately recreate the structure during its modern reconstruction.
