Zachatskaya Tower of Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, Medieval defensive tower in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia.
The Zachatskaya Tower is a stone defensive tower in the northern section of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, part of the medieval fortress wall that encircles the city's historic core. It has been fully restored and now houses a museum spread across several floors.
The tower was built in the early 16th century as part of the stone Kremlin fortress, which defended the city against attacks from the east. A landslide in the 18th century destroyed it almost entirely, and it was rebuilt from historical plans in the early 21st century.
The tower takes its name from a convent that once stood nearby, dedicated to the Feast of the Conception. Inside, the museum displays objects found during excavations in the city, offering a close look at everyday life across several centuries.
The tower is reached from within the Kremlin grounds, and sturdy shoes are recommended as the interior stairs are steep. A visit on a clear day is worthwhile, as the upper levels offer open views over the city and the river below.
The Zachatskaya Tower is the only tower in the Kremlin that was fully rebuilt from scratch rather than restored, after being lost for over two centuries. This means the current structure stands on the original foundations but is built entirely from new materials.
