Souq Okadh, Ancient marketplace in Taif Region, Saudi Arabia
Souq Okadh is a historic trading place between Nakhla and Taif that extends over a very large area and includes two hundred shops for traditional crafts. The site is now designed so visitors can move between the commercial spaces and the open areas for events.
The market opened its gates in the 6th century CE and developed into a central hub for caravans on the Spice Route through Arabia. It remained in operation until the early 8th century before losing its original function and being revived only in modern Saudi Arabia.
The market takes its name from the Okadh family and served as the main gathering point for Arab poets before Islam. Here poets recited their verses and competed for recognition, shaping the rules of classical Arabic language.
Visitors reach the site from Taif by road, and the complex offers dining areas and entertainment options alongside the sales stalls. The grounds are extensive, so plan several hours to explore the different zones.
The Banu Tamim managed the organization of the market and regulated dispute resolution between tribes during the trading days. Alongside the exchange of goods, athletic contests and religious assemblies also took place here, making the site a social center for the region.
