Lundby Old Church, Medieval church in Kyrkbyn, Sweden
Lundby Old Church is a medieval structure in Kyrkbyn, Gothenburg, built with Gothic features and thick stone walls. The bell tower was added later, in 1634, and stands next to a graveyard containing approximately 1700 graves.
The church was founded in 1301 and is among the seven preserved medieval churches in the Gothenburg region. A wooden church previously stood on this spot, and its Romanesque baptismal font remains visible inside the building today.
The church displays coats of arms from noble families on its walls, including the Ihre family with their own chapel in the southern section. These visible signs of noble connections reveal how important families were linked to this place over centuries.
The site opens on Sundays from 14:00 to 16:00 and offers a small, quiet experience for visitors. The graveyard is easy to walk through and invites you to explore at your own pace.
Inside the church stands a Romanesque baptismal font that came from an even older wooden church that occupied this same spot before the current stone building. This ancient stone connects two different eras of church history in one place.
