Kuggen, Office building in Lindholmen Science Park, Sweden.
Kuggen is a cylindrical office building in the Lindholmen district of Gothenburg, Sweden, clad in red ceramic tiles with triangular windows arranged in a spiral around its full height. The floors grow wider toward the top, so each level projects slightly beyond the one below it.
The building was completed by Wingårdh Arkitektkontor in March 2011 as part of a broader plan to redevelop the Lindholmen area, which had previously been used as a shipyard site. After the decline of Gothenburg's shipbuilding industry, the neighborhood was gradually transformed into a research and technology hub from the 1990s onward.
Kuggen sits within Lindholmen Science Park, an area that brings together universities, research institutes, and tech companies. Walking through the neighborhood, you notice a mix of students, engineers, and entrepreneurs moving between buildings throughout the day.
The building is most easily reached by the ferry that connects Lindholmen to central Gothenburg, and it is clearly visible from the landing stage. Since it is an office building, access for visitors is limited, but the exterior can be seen at any time.
The name Kuggen simply means "the cog" in Swedish, a reference to the building's toothed, circular outline. The facade also features a rotating sun screen system that turns automatically during the day to manage the amount of sunlight entering the offices.
