Amerikaskjulet, Maritime terminal in Gothenburg, Sweden
Amerikaskjulet is a maritime terminal building in Gothenburg featuring a granite foundation and plastered facades adorned with yellow glazed tiles forming a band around the ground floor. The structure now houses offices of the Port Authority and functions as a cruise terminal accommodating vessels up to 225 meters in length.
Completed in 1912, this terminal served as the first deep-water quay in Gothenburg harbor and enabled Swedish American Line vessels to dock at this berth. It marked a turning point in the city's port development and maritime capacity.
The name Amerikaskjulet, meaning America Shed, reflects its role as a departure point for Swedish emigrants heading to North America in the early 20th century. Visitors can still sense this migration history through the building's position at the harbor and its maritime character.
The building is located directly at the harbor and is easily accessible from the city center as part of Gothenburg's port area. The surrounding waterfront offers plenty of space to walk around, and being near other port attractions makes it a natural stop on a harbor exploration.
The structure earned the nickname Concrete Shed because it stood apart from the wooden and metal-framed buildings surrounding it at the harbor. This distinctive appearance made it instantly recognizable in the rapidly changing port landscape.
