Kulturreservatet Gathenhielm, Cultural park in Majorna, Gothenburg, Sweden.
Kulturreservatet Gathenhielm is a park containing traditional wooden houses arranged in an 18th-century urban layout. The buildings form narrow streets and small squares that preserve the appearance of an old town district.
The site began in 1749 with Gathenhielmska Huset, Gothenburg's oldest surviving wooden townhouse built on land owned by privateer Lars Gathenhielm. Over time more buildings were added to the area, creating an example of early urban development.
Artists and designers work in the historic buildings today, keeping creative practices alive within these wooden structures. You can see how people use the spaces for contemporary art and craft.
The reserve sits just steps away from the nearest tram stop in the Majorna area and is open during daylight hours. Parking is available nearby, making it easy to visit at your own pace.
During renovation work in 1916, workers uncovered original paintings and wallpapers hidden beneath newer layers. These decorations were carefully restored to show how rooms once looked.
