Matteus kyrka, Norrköping, Gothic Revival church in Norrköping, Sweden
Matteus kyrka is a Gothic Revival church built from red brick with a 64-meter eastern tower and four smaller towers at the corners. The interior holds about 1400 seats arranged around a central space supported by granite pillars with cement capitals.
Construction started in 1887 following architect Helgo Zettervall's design and was completed by 1892. The church was built during a period when many industrial cities in Sweden were expanding and needed larger religious buildings.
The nine tall windows display scenes from the Gospel of Matthew through colored glass work made by a craftsman studio in Austria. The way light passes through these images changes the feeling of the interior throughout the day.
The church has clear sight lines and large windows that flood the interior with daylight. You should know that the space cools down quickly inside, especially during busy periods with multiple services held close together.
The altar features Christ surrounded by symbols representing the four evangelists - an ox, eagle, angel, and lion. These ancient Christian symbols have been used by artists for centuries and appear here in a specific arrangement that draws the eye upward.
