Niagara, Educational complex in Universitetsholmen, Sweden
Niagara is an educational and research building on Universitetsholmen with three connected structures rising five, seven, and eleven stories. A central atrium runs through all levels, linking restaurants, cafes, shops, and teaching spaces together.
The building was constructed between 2012 and 2015 by Akademiska Hus Syd, marking the conversion of a former industrial area into a university campus. Its completion helped revitalize the Universitetsholmen neighborhood.
The building's name references Niagara Falls and symbolizes the flow of knowledge and people through its open design. The central atrium serves as a natural gathering place where students and staff encounter each other in daily routines.
The complex is easy to navigate, as areas for different activities are clearly marked and the central atrium serves as an orientation point. Visitors should expect varying foot traffic across different floors depending on the time of day.
The exterior's anodized aluminum surfaces shift and shimmer differently depending on weather and viewing angle, creating changing color reflections. This play of light on the facade gives the building a different visual character at different times of day.
