Mölndals Kvarnby, Industrial architectural complex in Mölndal, Sweden
Mölndals Kvarnby is a listed complex of mill buildings, factory structures, and worker housing set along the rapids of the Mölndal River in Mölndal, Sweden. The buildings span several periods and are connected by narrow lanes and footpaths running through the site.
The site used the river's power from early on, and during the 19th century it developed into a production center for paper, textiles, and oil. The growth of industry drew many working families to the area, gradually filling it with homes and workshops.
Many of the residential buildings were put up by factory workers who received loans from their employers to build homes on factory land. Walking through the area today, you can see how work and daily life were once woven together in the same streets.
The site is easy to walk through, with footpaths and information signs guiding visitors around the main buildings. The Mölndal City Museum, located nearby, provides maps and background information to help you make sense of what you see.
Although the site is industrial in origin, generations of working families owned the homes they lived in here, even as the factory stood right next door. This combination of private ownership and industrial dependency was unusual for the time and shaped how the community looked and functioned.
