Tonovec Castle, Archaeological site near Kobarid, Slovenia.
Tonovec Castle stands at 412 meters elevation on a rocky hill above the Soča River, featuring remains of twenty houses and multiple churches.
The settlement reached its peak between the 4th and 6th centuries AD, becoming one of the most substantial late antique hilltop settlements in the Eastern Alps.
The site contains multiple layers of history, from Stone Age settlements through medieval fortifications to structures from both World Wars.
Visitors can access the castle from a parking area 2 kilometers from Kobarid on the Kobarid-Bovec road, following marked stairs to the hilltop.
The archaeological excavations revealed an extensive network of buildings, indicating a complex settlement system that influenced regional development patterns.
