Tonovec Castle

Tonovec Castle is an archaeological site on a rocky hilltop above the Soča River near Kobarid. The ruins reveal the remains of approximately twenty dwellings and multiple churches that span different periods of habitation.

The settlement began in the Stone Age and flourished between the 4th and 6th centuries AD. It became one of the largest late antique hilltop settlements in the Eastern Alps during this era.

The hilltop displays remnants of multiple occupation phases that shaped the surrounding region for centuries. What visitors see today reflects how different communities chose this location to build their homes and religious structures across various periods.

Access starts from a parking area located roughly two kilometers from Kobarid on the road towards Bovec. Marked stairs lead visitors up the hillside to explore the archaeological remains.

Excavations revealed an extensive network of buildings indicating a complex and organized settlement. These findings show the site was far more than a simple fortress and influenced the entire surrounding region.
