Kobarid Municipality, Municipality in Soča Valley, Slovenia
Kobarid Municipality is an administrative unit in northwestern Slovenia, situated in the Soça Valley close to the Italian border. The territory covers an alpine valley carved by the Soça River, with several small settlements scattered along its length.
In October 1917, the area was the site of a major offensive in which Austro-Hungarian and German forces broke through the Italian lines, an event known in Italian as the Battle of Caporetto. After World War I the territory passed to Italy, and later became part of Yugoslavia before joining Slovenia.
The Kobarid Museum displays World War I exhibits through photographs, maps, and artifacts that document the region's military past. Visitors can see how this conflict shaped the lives of local people.
The main town sits in the valley and is reachable by road, while many of the smaller settlements are on higher ground and require more effort to reach. Walking shoes are a good idea if you plan to explore beyond the town center.
The Italian Ossuary on the hill above the town holds the remains of more than 7,000 soldiers from World War I inside a single chapel. The site is open to visitors and offers a wide view over the valley below.
