Arapapıştı Canyon

Arapapıştı Canyon is a deep gorge located where Aydın, Denizli, and Muğla provinces meet, cutting through limestone cliffs along the Akçay River. The towering walls contain multiple cave openings and support a river ecosystem below.

The canyon became known during Byzantine times when invading Arab forces found its steep walls impassable. The name reflects this period when the gorge played a role in regional defense and movement.

The cave series known as Sıra İnler in the canyon walls reveal how communities sought shelter and spiritual connection within this landscape over time. Visitors walking through can observe how these natural spaces shaped the way people lived in this region.
