Archaeological site of the Todos los Santos Church in Hoping Island, Archaeological site in Zhongzheng District, Taiwan.
The Archaeological site of the Todos los Santos Church on Hoping Island contains the structural remains of a monastery with buttresses and interior divisions spread across about 350 square meters. Excavations have revealed multiple layers of occupation that show how the site was used and rebuilt over different periods.
Spanish colonists built the church in the early 1600s as part of their settlement on the island. After Dutch forces took control, they repurposed the structure to hold Spanish prisoners of war.
The artifacts found here show how different groups met and traded on this island. European metal clasps, Chinese ceramics, and local pottery pieces tell stories of cultural contact that shaped Taiwan's early past.
You can reach the site by bus on route 101 from Keelung City, getting off at Heping Elementary School. From there, it is a short three-minute walk along Ping First Road to the excavation area.
Beneath the church remains lie artifacts from the Iron Age and Yuanshan culture dating back more than 3,000 years. These deep layers reveal that the site was occupied long before Europeans arrived on the island.
