Keelung Fort Colonels' Official Residence, Historic mansion and county monument in Zhongzheng District, Taiwan.
Keelung Fort Colonels' Official Residence is a wooden house built in 1931 in Keelung, Taiwan, now listed as a county-level monument. The building faces north and is paired with a traditional garden on the southern side of the property.
The building was put up in 1931 as a residence for staff of the Keelung Nagami Bus Company. After 1945, the military took over the property and used it as a quarters for senior officers, which gave the site its current name.
The building shows how Japanese wooden construction and Western decorative touches were combined in a single house, a common approach during the colonial period in Taiwan. Visitors walking through the rooms can see sliding doors, exposed timber frames, and Western-style window surrounds all within the same space.
The site is open on most weekdays, but hours are reduced on weekends, so it is worth checking before you go. Arriving early in the day gives you more time to look around the garden and the interior at your own pace.
The building went from a private bus company staff house to a military residence to a public monument, all without being substantially rebuilt between each change of use. This uninterrupted physical history across three very different owners is rarely found in buildings of this size.
