Heping Bridge, Road bridge in Keelung, Taiwan.
Heping Bridge is a road bridge in Keelung, Taiwan, connecting the city's mainland to Peace Island across the harbor entrance. It has separate lanes for vehicles and walkways on each side, making it the only road link to the island.
The bridge opened in 1935, replacing the boat crossings that were the only way to reach the island before that. Over the decades, the structure was reinforced and widened to handle the growing flow of vehicles and visitors.
The bridge's name comes from the Chinese word for peace, which also gives Peace Island its name. Standing on the walkway, visitors can watch fishing boats heading back to port and see the island's rocky coastline up close.
Walking across is straightforward, as the pedestrian paths are clearly separated from traffic and wide enough to stop and look around. Daytime is the best time to cross, since the harbor and the island's coastline are easier to take in when there is good light.
The bridge passes directly over a stretch of water where the tidal currents can be strong enough to visibly push small boats off course. This makes it a good spot to watch how experienced local sailors navigate the harbor entrance.
