Champion Mill, Mining mill in Lake County, Colorado, US
The Champion Mill stands on the eastern side of Mount Champion along Halfmoon Creek and contains multiple levels of industrial processing equipment. The structure displays how ore moved through different stages of mineral separation and refinement.
Built in the 1890s, the mill processed gold, silver, galena, and pyrite until operations ceased in 1919. The closure came when transportation costs to distant markets became too expensive to sustain profitability.
The mill shows how mining shaped mountain communities during Colorado's industrial boom period. The site reflects the central role that ore processing played in local life and economic survival.
You can view the mill from outside the protective gate, as access to the building is restricted for safety reasons. The fencing allows you to observe the structure and machinery without entering the grounds.
An electric tramline over 8 miles (13 kilometers) long connected the mill to the mine high on the mountainside. The towers supporting this system remain visible scattered across the slope today.
