Fort McPherson

Fort McPherson is a historic military outpost near Maxwell situated along the North Platte River. The grounds now contain a national cemetery spanning roughly 20 acres with carefully maintained graves and monuments throughout the property.

The fort was established in 1863 to protect the Overland Trail between Fort Kearny and Julesburg during western expansion. It served as a defensive position along this crucial trade route and helped safeguard travelers moving westward.

A natural spring beneath a large cottonwood tree was the only water source for miles along the Platte River during the fort's early days. This vital water supply made this location strategically important for both travelers and military personnel.
