Built in 1889 by George Robbins, the house gained recognition through its association with Francis Peabody, founder of Peabody Coal Company from 1911 to 1921.
The residence represents the upper middle-class railroad suburb movement that characterized the development of communities surrounding Chicago in the late 19th century.
Located at the intersection of Third and Washington Streets, the property includes a structure at 20 E. Third believed to be the former coach house.
Alexander Legge, president of International Harvester, resided in the house from 1922 until 1933, adding another layer to its industrial heritage.
