George M. Holmes Convocation Center

The George M. Holmes Convocation Center is a multipurpose facility on Appalachian State University's campus in Boone that spans about 200,000 square feet. The building contains a central arena with retractable seating for over 8,000 spectators, along with offices, classrooms, and a running track for the university's exercise science department.

The facility opened in 2000 and replaced the older Varsity Gymnasium, significantly modernizing the university's sports infrastructure. This opening marked a turning point for the campus and enabled expanded academic and competition opportunities.

The center hosts basketball games, volleyball matches, indoor track competitions, graduation ceremonies, and concerts that shape campus life. These events bring the university community together and create gathering points for students and visitors.

The venue is easily accessible on foot from the campus center and offers ample parking in the surrounding area. Visitors should note that the facility may have different entry rules and hours depending on the event scheduled.

The building received an advanced video system in 2017 with multiple large displays that form a massive array of LED elements. This system enables impressive visual presentations during events and makes watching more engaging for visitors.
