The Blue Ridge Parkway management established this viewpoint in the mid-20th century as part of their mission to connect natural landmarks.

The overlook includes a designated parking area near mile marker 289.5 on Blue Ridge Parkway, with access to nearby Thunder Hill trails.
From this elevation point, visitors can watch the sun set behind Tweetsie Railroad while observing the Cheat River winding 1,100 feet below.
