Gateway Bridge, Suspension bridge in Clinton, United States
Gateway Bridge is a suspension bridge crossing the Mississippi River between Clinton, Iowa and East Clinton, Illinois. It carries US Route 30 with two traffic lanes supported by a steel cable system.
Construction began in 1954 under the City of Clinton Bridge Commission and opened in 1956. The project was a significant undertaking for the region at that time.
The bridge links Clinton and East Clinton across the river, bringing communities together for trade and daily movement between the two states. Local residents use it as their primary connection between Iowa and Illinois.
The bridge is open daily to vehicle traffic on US Route 30 and undergoes regular maintenance checks. Pedestrians can also cross it and have clear views of the river and surrounding areas.
The structure uses a rare design with straight backstay cables instead of the typical multi-span system common in other suspension bridges. This technical feature makes it notable among civil engineers.
