Clarke Sanford constructed this building in 1922 as a multipurpose venue accommodating a car dealership, silent movie theater, and offices for the Catskill Mountain News. The structure gradually shifted its purpose as commercial needs in the area evolved over the decades.

The theatre carries the name of Italian opera singer Amelita Galli-Curci, who performed at its opening and made her home nearby in Highmount. This naming reflects the building's original purpose as an entertainment venue for the local community.
