Halcott Mountain

Halcott Mountain is a summit in the Catskill Mountains with an elevation of 3,537 feet and sits within New York's Forest Preserve. The area spans Greene County and is covered in dense forest.

The mountain gained protection in 1885 when New York established its Forest Preserve to prevent land development. This early conservation effort shaped the region for all following generations.

The mountain is known among hikers in the Catskill 3500 Club, who document their ascent by signing a summit register. This practice connects visitors to a community dedicated to exploring the region's peaks.

Climbing the peak requires bushwhacking skills since no maintained trails exist, with most routes starting from a parking area near Route 42. Visitors should prepare for uneven ground, thick brush, and challenging navigation.

The summit forms a natural watershed divide between the Delaware and Hudson river systems and hosts diverse wildlife. The area supports around 49 mammal species and over 70 bird species living in this border zone.
