Panther Mountain, Mountain summit in Catskill Mountains, New York, US.
Panther Mountain is a summit in the Catskill Mountains with an elevation of about 3,720 feet (1,130 meters) featuring steep slopes covered in northern hardwood forests. These give way to balsam fir at higher elevations, creating distinct forest zones up the mountainside.
In the 1940s, geologist George Chadwick conducted drilling operations and discovered natural gas deposits on the mountain. These reserves were never fully developed or exploited for commercial purposes.
The mountain is part of the Catskill 3500 Club, which requires hikers to reach its summit twice with at least one ascent during winter conditions. This membership challenge draws dedicated climbers who want to complete this specific accomplishment.
The summit can be reached via two main routes: a southern trail with viewing areas or a northern path starting from Fox Hollow Road. Both trails require good physical preparation and sturdy footwear due to the steep terrain.
The mountain may sit on an ancient meteorite impact crater from about 375 million years ago. Circular stream patterns and gravitational measurements suggest this unusual geological feature beneath the surface.
