Slide Mountain

Slide Mountain is a summit in the Catskill Mountains standing at about 4,180 feet, with steep slopes and thick forest cover. Rocky formations line the hiking routes, creating natural features that give the trail its character.

The mountain became part of the Catskill Forest Preserve in 1885, securing its protection as a natural area. This action opened the region for recreational use while preventing development.

The area attracted painters in the 1800s who made the Catskill landscape famous through their work. This artistic legacy still shapes how people see this region today.

The trail departs from Woodland Valley Campground and requires sturdy hiking boots and appropriate gear for changing weather. Allow plenty of time for the hike, as the terrain is demanding and rest stops are worthwhile.

The mountain gets its name from ancient landslides that shaped the northern slope and left distinctive rock faces. These geological features remain visible during the climb and reveal the power of natural forces at work.
