Empire State Railway Museum

The Empire State Railway Museum occupies the historic Ulster & Delaware Railroad Station building and displays exhibits about rail transport development and regional history. The station building was constructed in 1899 as the Ulster & Delaware Railroad expanded into the Catskill Mountains region. The railroad became essential for connecting this mountainous area to larger population centers and enabling trade and travel.

The museum preserves and restores a vintage steam locomotive, the LS&I No. 23, which sits on display with ongoing restoration work visible to visitors. This engine reveals the mechanical complexity that powered these early rail networks.
