Grants Mills Bridge, Covered bridge in Hardenburgh, United States
The Grants Mills Bridge is a covered wooden structure that crosses Mill Brook using a lattice truss design made of paired wooden planks held together by wooden pins. The construction follows traditional methods and remains visible to visitors walking through the woodland setting.
Local carpenters Edgar and Orrin Marks built this structure in 1902 as a crossing for farmers and mill operators in the area. Its use changed over time, eventually serving pedestrians only and later being restored using methods faithful to the original construction.
The bridge embodies traditional craft skills and still displays the hallmarks of early building techniques that local carpenters applied. Visitors can see the intricate wooden structure up close and understand how people crossed streams in earlier times.
The location is best visited on foot through wooded terrain, so sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended for the walk. Access is straightforward, though the setting is rural and remote from main roads.
Family members of original builder Edgar Marks personally undertook restoration work during the 1990s to preserve the bridge. This direct connection between past and present shows how local families maintained their ancestors' handiwork across generations.
