Gilpin Homestead, Historic homestead in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, United States.
Gilpin Homestead is a brick and stone residence in Chadds Ford expanded over more than a century with multiple additions. The main house contains rooms spread across basement and upper levels, with additional stone sections constructed throughout the 1800s to expand living and working space.
The property dates from 1754 and later served a military purpose during the American Revolutionary War. In autumn 1777, after a major battle, the residence housed high-ranking British officers in its role as a temporary command center.
The property reflects rural farm life with outbuildings that show everyday activities like cheese making and livestock management. These structures help visitors understand how families sustained themselves through agriculture in the 1700s and 1800s.
The property spans about 6 acres and includes the main residence along with several preserved outbuildings such as a carriage barn and spring house. Visitors should prepare for uneven terrain and older structures that maintain the rural character of the site.
The oldest section from 1754 shows faint marks on the plaster wall in the stair hall where an earlier staircase once existed. These subtle traces reveal how the house was adapted and remodeled over time.
