Grand Haven Musical Fountain, Musical fountain in Grand Haven, United States.
The Grand Haven Musical Fountain is a water feature on the Grand River in Grand Haven, Michigan, that combines synchronized water jets, colored lights, and music performances. The shows are visible from Waterfront Stadium, where visitors can watch the choreographed display from the shoreline.
The fountain was built in 1962 on Dewey Hill and was at the time the largest musical fountain in the world. It kept that title until the Bellagio fountains opened in Nevada.
On summer evenings, families and visitors gather along the Grand Haven Boardwalk to watch free shows where water displays are choreographed to different styles of music. Each show changes nightly, which is why many locals return several times throughout the season.
Shows take place nightly at dusk from late May through early September, with extra performances on weekends at the start and end of the season. Those who prefer to stay in their cars can tune to 88.7 FM to hear the audio without needing to find a spot near the waterfront.
The system controlling the water jets accounts for wind speed and water pressure in real time during each show, so that the nozzles and lights work together precisely. This means the same choreography can look noticeably different on a calm night compared to a windy one.
