Hickory Creek Wilderness, Wilderness area in Warren County, Pennsylvania.
Hickory Creek Wilderness is a protected forest zone in the Allegheny National Forest covering around 8,600 acres with dense hardwood and hemlock forests spread across rolling hills. The terrain rises and falls noticeably as you walk, creating varied landscapes within this largely undeveloped area.
The area gained official protection in 1984 when Pennsylvania designated it as a wilderness zone under federal conservation law. This protected status was significant because only two such zones exist within the entire Allegheny National Forest.
The land management follows strict preservation principles, prohibiting motorized vehicles and mechanical equipment to maintain natural environmental conditions.
A popular loop trail of about 12 miles offers both day hiking and overnight camping in the backcountry. The paths are generally marked, but weather can change quickly and the forest stays damp and cool most of the year, so proper gear is important.
Two creeks flowing through the forest support populations of native brook trout, while black bears, deer, and barred owls make their home in the surrounding trees. These animal communities thrive because motor vehicles and mechanical equipment are completely prohibited in this protected space.
